We are happy  that this year the winner in the National compettition is our colleague Boris Cenov (Department of Plant and Fungal Diversity and Resources, Division of Paleobotany and Palynology). Our young paleobotanist won 4 awards - the  Grand Jury Prize, the award of the audience, and these of the "Obekti" magazine and the Society of the Scientists in Bulgaria. ЗBoris Cenov will participate at the FameLab International Finals on 12-16 June 2012 in Cheltenham, UK.

Boletales internet-site

Since 25 October 2010 an internet-site about the boletes mushrooms has been launched by Dr Boris Assyov (Division of Mycology, Department of Plant and Fungal Diversity and Resources).

The site is unique in Europe and aimed to be an online-resource for wider public interested in Boletales mushrooms. It presents a short overview on 147 species of boletes known so far from Europe. Another aim of the site is to give an idea to how boletes are collected and studied, what literature could be used to do that. So far the site has more than 20 000 visitors from 110 countries all over the world.

Electromagnetic coils constructed at Kalimok biological station

To test the possibility that birds use geomagnetic information for navigation high precision electromagnetic coils were constructed at Kalimok biological station. They were designed to independently control different parameters of the geomagnetic field. The coils will be used to perform simulated magnetic displacements under controlled magnetic conditions with caged passerine migrants. Birds will be exposed to simulated longitudinal and latitudinal magnetic displacements, by changing the angle of inclination and field intensities around the cages. Their orientation will be recorded in circular cages. The new facilities will be used also for studying of orientation and navigation mechanisms based on geomagnetic field of other animal groups.
