The Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research of BAS and the National Museum of Natural History of BAS are pleased to announced the exhibition "Bulgarian Ramsar sites". It is organised in the frame of the WETLANET Project.
Bulgaria joined the Ramsar Convention with the decision of the Council of Ministers from 18 November 1974. As in January 2012, our country is represented in the list of the internationally-important wetlands with 11 sites. The exhibition will present numerous photos and a brief information about the biodiversity of the Ramsar sites of our country.
The official opening of the exhibition will be on the International Day of Wetlands, 2 February 2012, 16:00 at the National Museum of Natural History, Blvd "Tsar Osvoboditel" No. 1

Electromagnetic coils constructed at Kalimok biological station
To test the possibility that birds use geomagnetic information for navigation high precision electromagnetic coils were constructed at Kalimok biological station. They were designed to independently control different parameters of the geomagnetic field. The coils will be used to perform simulated magnetic displacements under controlled magnetic conditions with caged passerine migrants. Birds will be exposed to simulated longitudinal and latitudinal magnetic displacements, by changing the angle of inclination and field intensities around the cages. Their orientation will be recorded in circular cages. The new facilities will be used also for studying of orientation and navigation mechanisms based on geomagnetic field of other animal groups.
