Entomological and Arachnological Collections
The arachnological and entomological collections of IBER-BAS are inherited from the Institute of Zoology - BAS for its 64 year period of existence to 2010. The collection of microscopic slides includes two major groups of invertebrates: mites and insects. The mite collection (Chelicerata: Acari) includes about 7,600 slides of 120 species of order Mesostigmata and about 2,000 slides of undetermined material. The insect collection includes 4,360 slides of 80 species of order Phthiraptera.
The collection of dry, stuffed insects contains about 265,000 specimens from the orders Odonata, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Dermaptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera. It is the second largest entomological collection in Bulgaria regarding both number of species and number of specimens. The value of the collection regarding the origin of the material is significant. The collection archives samples from the following countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kirghizstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malagasy Republic, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Republic of South Africa, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Slovakia, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Tadzhikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, The Netherlands, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia, Zanzibar, Zimbabwe.
Type material includes 1415 type specimens from 259 species, including 83 holotypes.
The collection is opened for a visit by scientific researchers in the work time table of the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research.
