Research interests

I have been working in the field of avian biology since 1993. My major research interest is seasonal migration as a tool for the study of microevolution of birds. I have also worked on the fauna, reintroduction and ecology of endangered and rare bird species.
The main focus of my research is on the microevolution of birds. My research is broadly in population ecology with particular emphasis on the responses of individuals to changing environmental conditions and the proximate factors influencing these responses. I am interested in evolutionary consequences of bird migration and the adaptive significance of migratory habits as well as to the migrants’ flexibility in responding to environmental changes.
At present, I am interested in the norm of reactions and adaptive radiation in performance of the seasonal migration in birds. After the large scale investigations of this adaptation in birds I am interested now in the study of the process in details. My research group works primarily on wild populations of birds since these offer excellent opportunities for testing a number of theoretical predictions in this area. Recent work has focused variability in orientation behaviour, physiological conditions of the migrants and terms of migration at specific and population levels.
We have also worked on captive birds and on methods for reintroduction in nature of endangered species of birds and conservation aspects of bird migration. I have been also involved in a project of impact estimation of wind turbines on the migrating birds along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
I have recently been interested in the molecular approach to population studies and in my group we currently have a number of ongoing studies in this area. Bird parasite interaction and its concequences on the population proceses are studied both in experimental and natural infected Gread Reed Warblers (Acr. arundinaceus). The polymorphism of the population in Gentoo Penguins (P. papua) from Livingstone island, Antarctica and Paddyfiel Warblers (Acr. agricola) with most western breeding population in Bulgaria have been studied.
I collaborate with a number of colleagues both here in Bulgaria and abroad.
